Like the mythical Brigadoon that reappears from the mists of the past once every hundred years, the little harbour village of Tobermory, Ontario reappears each season to world-weary travellers who soon come to know that in a very real sense they have come home. Encircled by timeless pure waters, ancient towering cliffs, and endless blue skies, Tobermory presides over a land of enchantment and wonder that returns us once more to those moments of youth when living was more simple and pleasures were more strongly felt.
To set sail from its harbours, to descend into its depths, or to simply gaze out at its shimmering waves is to respond to instincts that are far older than time.
So, here’s to Big and Little Tub, Lake Huron & the beaches of Singing Sands.
Here’s to Fathom Five & Flowerpot Island, to Cabot Head, Bear’s Rump and Dunk’s Bay.
Here’s to skies filled with soaring gulls, sweeping swallows, solitary herons and waters concealing deep-diving loons.
Here’s to the Big Dipper, the Little Dipper and the Great Milky Way.
And here’s to those silvery meteors that streak through the dark August skies.
So, sit back and relax and enjoy your fine meal, and as you occasionally gaze out at the sunset or into the dark waters, you might try to imagine yourself back some 400 million years ago, when those very rocks and cliffs at the edges of the harbour were used by the earth’s earliest land animals as pathways out of the sea.
Astounding, eh?
Thus, a final toast — to you our guest, and in a very real sense… Welcome Home.
